Alopecia Calendar

ladies lineMove over Calendar Girls! 12 inspiring ladies have bared all, including bald heads, in a unique fundraising calendar! Their ambition? To show that Bald is Beautiful!

Whether you have cancer, thinning hair, scarring or Alopecia, this calendar aims to showcase and raise awareness of lovely ladies (and gents) without hair! All of the models have Alopecia, and the calendar will raise funds for Alopecia UK, but that doesn’t mean you have to have Alopecia to get involved!

cover shotMarcus from Bowbridge Green was invited to be the photographer on this project, he said I took up photography on a serious basis about the time the original calendar girls calendar came out.  I always said if I was asked, if the project was for an excellent cause and had total integrity then I would shoot one. Nudity is a non issue for me and it was straightforward to do this professionally and sensibly. When Victoria asked me I was only too happy to be involved, she is completely cool about her hair loss but I knew that for some of the others it was a major issue and my team would have to be sensitive.

wolfhoundI couldn’t do this job alone so brought in a team to help out, they were brilliant, fetching lights, setting up shots, getting the right people in place, making sure we were vaguely keeping to time!

My other assistant Beth is a terrific photographer in her own right, incredibly grounded and sensible. She did a great job in herding the ladies.

I brought in two of the best make up artists around. Bex is amazing, she has such a talent and the ladies looked beautiful https://www.facebook.com/rebekahdeponeomakeupandhair

article-0-21241F3E00000578-768_964x617The other make up artist was Marina Firth https://www.facebook.com/Marinafirthmua who I’ve known for a good while and she is brilliant, we could not have done the shoot without her and Bex

No one ever thanks the bottle washer but Victoria’s mum kept us fed and watered and was fantastic.

Every good shoot needs styling and it would have been impossible without Fern Berreen https://www.facebook.com/Ferniche.Millinery her work in pulling the shots together was spectacular and put the touches together that makes all the shots interesting.

Having a great team who were relaxed and fun helped with some of the challenges the ladies had.  Getting over  nudity was a big challenge, taking wigs off was a big challenge, we had laughter, tears and some amazing stories of courage from the ladies. I’m so proud to be a part of this, it has been life changing for all of us who have been involved and I’m really proud to have played my part.

I knew we had a project that had potential to be of interest but I had no idea it would go global. Media in every continent have picked it up and run with it.

It’s gone global, in the UK, the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Huffington Post, the Independent, Cosmopolitain and Bella were some of the titles to have used the story.  Worldwide, we’ve been in China Daily, The Washington Post, Newsru in Russia as well as publications in over 80 countries.

The latest media outlet to run with it is ITV Good Morning Britain, Ben Shepherd said “These are great pictures”
